Five Cinemateques across Israel will host (starting May 15) the Eco Cinema Festival of 2008. If you happen to be in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa or Sderot in the south or Rosh Pina in the north, call the local cinematque and check out the list and hours for the festival’s screening and outdoor happenings. Unfortunately, the English translation of the festival’s web site is not yet accessible, so I’ll do my best and list the films participating in this wonderful celebration of Eco Friendly People (who are also movie friendly).

List of movies: The best of “Live Earth” film competition (Short films from USA 2007), “Garbage Country” (Israel 2008), “The Queen of Trees” (USA 2006), “The Struggle for Urban Space” (Spain 2007), “Addicted to Plastic” (Canada 2008), “Earth” (UK 2007), tribute to “Free Range Studios” - Animated Eco Films, “Les Animaux Amoureux” (Animals In Love, France 2008), “Got the Facts on Milk?” (USA 2007), “Waste=Food” (USA 2007), “Crude Impact” (USA 2006), “I Am an Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA” (USA 2006), “Garbage Warrior” (UK 2007), “Being Caibou” (Canada 2006″).

Some of the screenings will be followed by an audience-director dialog and some of them will include a discussion with environmental activists from Israel.

There will be at least one outdoor screening in HaYarkon park in Tel Aviv - as a part of an alternative “Lag BaOmer” celebration, the movie Les Animaux Amoureux, will be screened on a huge screen at “Rosh Tzippor” section of the park (May 22 @ 8pm). The Tel Aviv festival will also host an Organic Market on Saturday, May 24, 12noon-7pm, out side the Cinemateque. Other special events will take place in Jerusalem, Haifa and Rosh Pinna, so call the local cinemateque and get there…

Next week, Manchester United and Chelsea are going to meet in Moscow for the UEFA Champions League Final. This is an exciting event for most Israelis who follow European football and this year it’s even more thrilling for us due to the Israeli aspect of the match - Avram Grant - Chelsea’s manager. That doesn’t imply that most Israelis are Chelsea fans now, but I’m sure even Man U fans in Israel will be able to find some comfort should the unlikely thing happen and Chelsea will win. As for me, I hope Chelsea will win, if not for its game then just to spite English media who gave Grant a lot of shit this year, some of it justified some of it completely unfounded. Oh and by the way, an anecdote: A few months ago I went with my brother and sister to one of the beaches in Tel Aviv, and guess who we saw sipping his drink on Metzitzim beach? None other than Mr. Abramovich…my brother had to stop me from approaching him…what can I say, its good to have a brother around when you are about to make a fool of your self.

Regarding the commercial, heading to this post - it was produced by the Israeli Tourist Office, as part of a series of “Sexy” commercials promoting Israel. Though I find them sweet and even effective, I think it could have been done better. For example, why are all the guys (straight and gay) on this commercial are so unattractive? Couldn’t they have found better looking guys for this? Aren’t there enough gorgeous boys around? Especially among the gay community….Well maybe I’m just being a nagger, and maybe this was intended for potential tourists whom we wouldn’t like to deter from coming to Israel, hence, let them think Israeli men are hideous and no matter if you are gay or straight - the girls and guys here are hungry for you and there’s no need to worry about competition….

Tourists visiting Israel May want to check out what’s going on in Tel Aviv Cinemateque this week: illustrious, illuminating, spiritual and challenging movies to the heart and soul from around the world will be screened in the Spiritual Film Festival from May 14 to May 17. These movies are meant to have us all reflect on our existence in peace with ourselves and with the world around us. This is the second spiritual film festival, last year I attended the festival and watched an interesting movie by an Australian director who has examined Ecstasy Dances around the world, in different tribes and religious sects. It was uplifting and exciting to say the least.

In the festival, one can find full length features, short films and documentaries. The festival will host spiritual movie makers from around the world and the audience will have an opportunity to meet them and converse with them.

The festival will offer a spiritual happening outside the theater as well, with spiritual art exhibitions and workshops for children, New Age fair and free world music live concerts at the cinemateque piazza. Last year I caught there a concert of “Insect” - a human beat-box band - and it was out of this world!!! In less then ten minutes a sitting 1000 people crowd was jumping up and down in ecstasy.

Check out the list of films participating in the festival. Surly you will find at least one movie you would like to watch amongst the 31 films from the USA, Germany, Iceland, Ecuador, UK, Switzerland, Hong Kong, France, China, Australia, Spain, India, Morocco and Israel.

The world famous Israeli dance company, Bat Sheva, will be performing its new work in a special temporary pavilion built on the open deck of Tel Aviv Port. Since visiting the port of Tel Aviv is a must for any traveler coming to Israel, I strongly recommend checking out this sensational new work by Choreographer Ohad Naharin - the artistic manager of Bat Sheva Dance Company.

Furo presents a unique collaboration between Choreographer Ohad Naharin and Tabaimo - the renowned Japanese Animation artists. Together they created a magical experience that attempts to blur all distinctions. Tabaimo’s creation is projected on three walls while two Bat Sheva dancers are swaying with precision.

Furo offers an exceptional fusion: it’s a meeting of cultures, a mixed media art creation and a multi-sensory experience. It is a perpetual performance; spectators can come and go as they please. You can spend as much time as you would like in the show and even watch it again and again in a loop. The longer you stay in the world out side dissolves and disperse. The loop of the dance will grab you and you will find your self inside an animated movie.

Spotting the theater built especially for the show, on the Port’s deck is easy…all you’ll need to do is buy tickets and enter the wooden pavilion.

Furo will start showing on May 15^th, and will go on for a month.

An exhibition titled “Eventually we’ll Die - Yong Israeli Art in the Nineties” opened recently in Herzliya Museum of contemporary art. The exhibition focuses on the idea of “Youth” that took over Israel in the nineties.

The group exhibition will reflect on events, issues and phenomena that Israel dealt with during the 90’s: The Oslo Accords, the Vision of a New Middle East, the Palestinian Uprising (Intephada), The Yitzhak Rabin murder, Identity Politics, Homosexuality, Feminism, Seinfeld, the Genome Project, Ecstasy, the First Gulf War, House, Britpop and Grange music, Demonstrations against the Globalization, Dana International etc.

Among the participating artists: Sigalit Landau and Nir Hod, two Israeli artists that in the last few years have had a successful career in New York, Adi Ness, Meir Gal, Avner Ben-Gal and Ohad Meromi.

My best friend, the Plucked Rat, just became a father. His first born, Dov (temporary name - the wife will not have it…) just came into the World, just now!!!

It’s Independence Eve. here in Israel, there are parties every where, you can hear music where ever you go…and Little Dov (again, temporary….) decided to dance into the world tonight of all nights and spend his first day on Earth surrounded by utter joy, music and hope.

This old Israeli song was originally sang by one of the military bands in Israel, but four years ago it was taken by local Hip-Hop artists Subliminal and the Shadow and was remixed into a hip-hop song especially for the Israeli Independence Day. I will not translate the words; suffice to say that this song calls for peace in the Middle East and the return of soldiers home. Hence the line: Flowers in the Barrel….

Anarchist, Queer, Anti-Militaristic Event on Independence Day

This Friday, May 9, while military bands from around the world will be playing their music for peace, in honor of Israel’s 60 Independence at Rabin’s square, an anarchist/queer protest will take place not far from there on Rothschild Ave.

A black tank made of old bicycles with a pink-cock-shaped-barrel spraying water every where, will be placed in front of the house where the original declaration of the state of Israel took place. The pink dick and tank will be there to protest 41 years of Israeli occupation, Palestinian suffering and Israeli worship of militaristic leaders.

The Pink cock will spray water on the “Declaration Building” and the queer organizers state (with a smile) that it will be there to remind us that occupation is a disaster at the service of an (im)potent regime, that the national erection rules our lives and that its time to stop fighting over who has a bigger dick… Every one is welcome to join and protest the oppression of the Palestinian people. (Friday, May 9, from noon time, on Rothschild Ave.).

Though Israel hasn’t been so gay friendly in its early years, in the last two decades it has become one of the most liberal countries in the world when it comes to GLBT rights. Tel Aviv in particular turned into a vibrant center of GLBT life and culture and this week some of the better and happier parties celebrating Israel 60^th Independence will be hosted by the GLBT community. Israel is known for its dichotomies. We would like to think of our selves as a democratic country but at the same time maintain our Jewish identity. We strive for peace but we hate to compromise…Most of us cant speak Arabic but we expect our Arab citizens to salute at the site of our flag with its star of David, not to mention the national anthem which talks about the Jewish longing for Zion…  

This is Israel and these are the Israelis: we love our country, but can’t stop criticizing it. One of the oddest dichotomies in Israel is the beloved mix of joy and mourning. Our national memorial day for IDF soldiers and casualties of Terrorist attacks, is marked in the 24 hours proceeding our Independence Day. Thus, the whole country is extremely sad for 24 hours and then we start parting for another two days…How strange is that?

On Tuesday, May 6, at 8pm a siren will be heard throughout the country - The Memorial Day for IDF soldiers who died in Israeli wars, shell begin. Another siren will be heard the next morning at 11am when ceremonies will take place in every cemetery in the country. If you are visiting Israel and you are in a public place while these sirens go off, stand still and respect this national mourning day.

On Tuesday evening (8:45pm), a special live music concert - a very sad and emotional one - will take place in Rabin’s square, at the heart of Tel Aviv. The concert is dedicated to Israeli casualties of war and their families. Many famous Israeli singers will perform much loved Israeli songs. Among the singers you will find: Hemi Rodner, Mati Caspie, Eti Ankri, Shiri Maimon, Yoni Bloch, Daniel Solomon and Maya Buskila. The concert is free and everyone is welcome to come and sing at the square.
