If you like hiking, you are in for a treat today. The Israel National Trail, or Shvil Israel in Hebrew, is a 940 km hiking trail stretching along Israel from north to south. Its northern end is at Dan, near the Lebanese border in the far north of the country, and it extends to Eilat at the southernmost tip of Israel on the Red Sea. The trail is marked and thus easily followed by single hikers or small groups. You can choose to sleep in the wilderness or stay in towns or small Moshavs along the trail. Swim in the Sea of Galilee, or in the Mediterranean, discover marvelous desert scenery, unfold the biblical stories of places you pass and inhale the calming solitude of nature. Meet People you wouldn’t normally get a chance to meet as a tourist and experience the land of Israel as oppose to the state of Israel. One will not recognize this picturesque Israel from the pictures seen on television news, which typically only depict the conflict which occurs in small sections of a largely conflict-free land. The best time to hike the trail is during October through November, or from February till mid-Mai. During February to mid-May, the landscape is green and the flowers are blooming, more water is available in the creeks, and the rivers up north are much more impressive. In both seasons you can expect rain in the Northern part of the trail. A tent or tarp and raingear would be good to have. Hiking through the trail can be divided to intervals and one can choose to rest between sections. Those visiting Israel for a short time can choose one part of the Trail that they find particularly interesting and hike for a couple of days. The trail is safe, no reports of people, tourists or locals; experiencing violence on the trail has ever been made.
